Our Investment Approach

Our goal is to achieve investment returns which exceed both the FTSE/JSE All Share Index and competing funds over the medium to long-term. Achieving this aim requires superior stock selection skills and the discipline to ignore popular opinion. Asset allocation and timing ability will also play a role. In the sense that value investing involves buying companies at a discount to their intrinsic worth, we can be considered value investors. This value-based style by it's nature may often appear to be contrarian.

Within the South African market, we look for a diverse range of investment opportunities. These include:

  • Quality growth companies not fully recognised as such by the market
  • Turnaround situations
  • Corporate action possibilities
  • Cyclicals at a low point in the cycle.
Conversely, we are averse to momentum investing, to fashionable high PE growth stocks and to portfolios which correlate closely with the All Share Index.
